process & practice / "step" stop motion video

Please visit the VTape support materials page to see samples of the step videos, until I get time to build a separate page for "stepping" and scroll down to see the step videos. (Incidentally, this aplication led to the development of the Interval site.)

I made several sequences in which I made stop motion video as I stepped past an object, or around an object. The process is very similar to the following videos, perhaps no different. Nevertheless many of these sequences were names using "step" as a title indicator, while others used "follow."
As with the "following" videos, the step videos was described a video sequences that used a process using a camera with a crosshair shooting at frequent intervals aiming the crosshair at the thing being stepped past or around, and then making a video from this sequence.
I'm still not sure if this would be considered time lapse, or stop motion. It's sort of both because while the technique is mor similar to the traditional stop motion process, it is also like time lapse since the time interval between sequences captures change in the environment, other than the altered/stepped camera position/aim, which is revealed in the final video in a time-lapse way.

In step past hay bales, the sequence captures both the stepping past a field covered in hay bales and it also captures the changing illumination as the sun sets, sine the sequence took place over a length of time.

Perhaps this could be called a form of "motion lapse" using physical stepping rather than a mechanized device. The process was extremly captivating and I shot many of these sequences.

Wanting to document the experience by describing what was going on, I used the audio-note recording function of the camera to audio record my thoughts, reflections, reminders and reports.

In 2004, when I posted several of these sequences in the Interval project, the audio recordings were not included. Now, as I build this archive, I plan to include them.

These samples were part of an application to V-Tape for inclusion in Images Festival
